Scott P. ‘Doc’ Vaughn is an illustrator and writer living in the Phoenix area, hailing originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was raised with an encouraged imagination. He has tuned those imaginings into zines (Bombshelter/M&V), websites, comics, and novels (HERO-LORE), as well as hundreds of personal and freelance illustrations. He has shown at local venues such as AZ Artlink’s ‘First Fridays’ and has been published online and in select periodicals.

Scott (AKA Doc Redfield)’s mediums include pen & ink, pencil, and digital color (usually Adobe Photoshop colors and paints). His classically inspired ink-work stands out, rendered in technical pens, microns, and sometimes a mix of graphite, ink-wash, charcoal or digital. His artistic influences include classic and modern illustrators, such as Alex Raymond, Frank Frazetta and Frank Cho (but hardly limited to Lee, Linsner, Royo, Struzan, Charest, Schultz, etc).

Scott’s writing began simply as expression and a way to get the creative ideas that he originally couldn’t sketch onto paper in at least some tangible form. He later moved on to self-publishing zines and finally comic books. When he found that resources for continuing such ventures alone (relatively) were lacking, he decided to try writing short stories. He’s completed his first novel, “Shards of Destiny”, based on his aborted comic book, Hero-Lore. Scott also self-published a prequel called “Tales of the Hero-Lore” while waiting for his book deal to hopefully take off. His style takes nods from great character and adventure writers such as Raymond E. Feist, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Robert E. Howard.

Among Scott’s interests are classic illustrations and movie genres, being with friends, and a severe predilection for ‘Doctor Who’. His work takes many nods from pop, pulp, and classical culture. He is available for freelance illustrations and commissions, and he also has two novels currently seeking publication and one self-published short-story anthology set in his ‘Hero-Lore’ universe.

A self-proclaimed renaissance man, Scott is a self-proclaimed illustrator, writer, zine-editor, creator, self-publisher, designer, webmaster, ordained minister, fanboy, collector, movie critic, malt lover and an appreciator of fine wines, pipes, swords, billiards, erotica, entertainment, and more.

Artist's Statement:
I am an illustrator, and whether it for web, books, comics, magazines, or for commercial design, I'm there to convey a point or emotion via art and to capture a scene, real or implied. I tend to take a realistic edge to some subjects considered to be more fantasy oriented. I enjoy working most in black and white, with emphasis on grays in certain mediums. Primarily I use pen and ink, graphite and colors created in Adobe Photoshop and other programs.
-
Working with micron pens, technical nibs, medium graphite or charcoals, my eye is always closest to detail. Hatching and stipple in the b/w mediums are a favorite. My goal with each piece is to catch the mood that I want to convey, be it a realistic setting or more fictitious. Each character has an emotion, each background a setting for a play. Each illustration or drawing is a part of me, either through fantasy or feeling. Be it through my art or my writing, I'm always out to show a side of something without necessarily making a statement with every piece.
-
I'm more interested in always improving and doing the job right than just getting it done. My art and creativity attests to that.
